My take on this: Holding a yard sale is a lesson in value

I had a yard sale this past Friday and Saturday. Yard sales are interesting. You never know how to price things.

I had men’s and women’s and junior sizes. Now, we all know there is nothing cheap about jean prices, except when I’m having a yard sale. I had my sign made with good intentions of getting $5.00 a pair. That’s a bargain for jeans that still look brand new.

The first five people who asked the price, even with my bright, neon pink sign hanging up, seemed insulted by the price. A blue-light-special at K-Mart wouldn’t be that reasonable.

So, I came down to $2.00 a pair. I still had people holding a pair of jeans pointing to them and say, “A dollar?” Yard sales are tough!

They are so much work. I made three or four trips to Russellville to take my yard sale items to sale. That meant I loaded and unloaded my car before I ever began to hang the clothes that had no value whatsoever.

I drove ten miles from home, only to be insulted. Only joking. Yard salers know from the beginning, you won’t get what things are worth, but I know some who always get four or five dollars for jeans. Well, not all of us are as lucky, but if you happen to be someone who makes five dollars on jeans when you have yard sales, would you please write a letter to the editor of the Franklin Free Press to let me know how you do it? I would appreciate it very much.

I was selling dresses for two dollars and by the second day I was showing everybody that wouldn’t haggle me down because I got so low they wouldn’t. Everyone started whispering amongst themselves how it was only fifty cents or a quarter. I must have finally found what a ten to twenty dollar piece of clothing was finally worth!

I’ve never been to a yard sale with clothes at such a discount. I don’t have a lot of yard sales anyway. I tend to give more things away than I sell. And it’s sure a lot less hard work to give them away without having a yard sale.

I enjoy having a yard sale for the learning experience. I’ve found the ones with the good hearts, the ones who expect the world to give to them, and the people who really do treat others as they want to be treated. I carry their goodness deep within my heart. The blessings I receive far exceed the money I make.
