Commission receives update of NACOLG services

Franklin County Commissioners received their annual update from officials with the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments at their February 13th workshop.

NACOLG Executive Director Keith Jones shared with the commission the multiple ways his agency works for, and with, Franklin County officials, including the agency's Department of Governmental Services, Aging Services, Senior AIDE/Worker Program, Revolving Loan Fund, Department of Planning and Transportation and meal delivery.

In 2016, more than 47,300 combined congregate and home delivered meals were received by Franklin County residents, including locations in Phil Campbmell, Russellville, Hodges and Red Bay.

NACOLG's Department of Aging Services served 61 elderly and disabled clients last year, compared to 56 in Winston County, 77 in Marion County, 113 in Colbert County and 178 in Lauderdale County.

The department was established 43 years ago to serve the over 60 population of northwest Alabama.

NACOLG administers the Senior AIDE program that provides part-time (19 ¾ hours) on the job training opportunities for low income seniors at minimal cost to employers/host agency. NACOLG has 31 host agencies, all governmental or non-profit agencies, that provide $317,000 in annual wages to 49 low income seniors.

NACOLG's Revolving Loan Fund consists of locally controlled capital used to finance new and expanding businesses to create or retain jobs. The program is designed for small to medium sized businesses in the northwest Alabama area. Funds can be used to purchase land or buildings, construct or renovate buildings, purchase equipment and machinery or provide working capital.

Business owners interested in learning more about loan opportunities are encouraged to contact Corine Bostick at 256-389-0559.

Governmental Services is the part of NACOLG that works with each member government to develop viable community and economic development projects, including infrastructure and community enhancement projects.

This department works with numerous agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Small Business Administration and others, to secure funding for local governments.
