Handy Festival event aims to help local teachers

This Saturday, July 22, Medical Associates of the Shoals, P.C., will host a free W.C. Handy Music Festival event from 6-8 p.m.

Music will be provided by the band Deja Vu. The location will be behind Helen Keller Hospital in the medical office building parking lot at 1120 South Jackson Highway, Sheffield. The stage and seating area will be under a large tent. The event is free, and the entire community is invited.

Certified teachers in attendance who currently teach in city, county or private schools in Franklin, Colbert or Lauderdale counties will receive a free bag of classroom supplies. Items include products teachers often pay for out of their own pockets, such as dry-erase markers, flash drives, disinfecting wipes, markers, Post-it notes, card stock, paper and more. Supplies will be available for the first 1,000 teachers in attendance.

The supplies are valued at just under $25. Teachers should bring their school name badge or school I.D. Card.

According to Josh Vacik, MD, FACP, a physician with Medical Associates of the Shoals, this event is a fun way for the physicians and staff to express their appreciation to the community and to support area teachers.

“Both of my parents were teachers, so I totally understand the challenges and rewards of being an educator," Vacik said. "Studies show that better education leads to better health, and we want to do what we can to help our teachers as they encourage and motivate our children to achieve the best possible education they can."
