Local group travels to Texas to volunteer in hurricane aftermath

“First In...Last Out.”“First In...Last Out.”

That's the motto of the  Churches of Christ Disaster Response Team, an organization that works to render aid to disaster survivors while bringing them the Good News of the Gospel.

Through the organization of the DRT and North Highlands Church of Christ in Russellville, a group of northwest Alabama residents traveled to flood-ravaged southeast Texas last week to volunteer their services and deliver donated supplies to those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

An  additional truckload of supplies will be transported to Texas this weekend, and there's still time for area residents to donate or contribute to the effort. The group of volunteers who traveled to Portland, Texas last Thursday included adult and student members of several area churches, and the supplies that were delivered came from collection efforts through local schools and churches and Northwest-Shoals Community College.

North Highlands member Thomas Cochran helped organize the bus load of volunteers. For those interested in making cash donations or donations of supplies, you can contact Cochran through his Facebook page @ThomasCochran. Supplies, including water, canned food, diapers, baby formula and other non-perishable items, can be dropped off at the North Highlands Fellowship Hall through Friday.

The volunteers traveled to North Bay Church of Christ in Portland, command central for the DRT, then on to various destinations where they were needed. Volunteer efforts included mucking houses, clearing brush with chainsaws, sorting clothing and supplies and other critical tasks.
