Daniel, Cochran help Russellville pick up first area win

Kalli Beth Daniel had three hits for Russellville on Thursday, including a tie-breaking RBI double in the fourth inning, and the Lady Golden Tigers held on to beat East Limestone 8-7 for their first area win.

The game was tied 3-3 before Russellville (9-8, 1-1) scored four times in the top of the fourth to take control. Senior Kayla Cochran, who had homered in her previous at bat, dropped down a bunt and reached on an error to spark the rally. Daniel then delivered an RBI double to put the Lady Golden Tigers on top 4-3.

Following a walk to A.J. Taylor and a double-steal, Karlie Moore came through with a two-run single. Moore later scored when Madison Murray reached on a bunt hit, capping off the big inning and making it 7-3.

East Limestone came right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Russellville added a key insurance run in the top of the fifth when Krista Sikes singled and scored on a double by Taylor. The Lady Indians rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Russellville reliever Emma Whitfield was able to protect the lead and record the final out.

Megan Warhurst picked up the win in the circle, allowing two earned runs on one hit in 3.1 innings after relieving Sikes in the bottom of the second. Warhurst struck out four batters, walked three and hit two before giving way to Whitfield, who earned the save by pitching the final two innings. Whitfield allowed two earned runs on four hits.

The Lady Golden Tigers grabbed an early lead in the top of the first when Daniel singled to right, stole second, stole third and then scored on a hit by Moore. They threatened to add to the lead but left the bases loaded.

After East Limestone tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first, Russellville went back to work with the bats in the top of the second. Kourtney Joyner reached on an infield hit and moved to second on a sac bunt by Sikes. Cochran followed with a two-run shot to center, her first home run of the season, to make it 3-1. The Lady Golden Tigers loaded the bases again on a double by Daniel, a single by Taylor and a walk to Moore, but they stranded three runners for the second straight inning.

East Limestone tied the game again with two runs in the bottom of the second before Russellville took the lead for good in the fourth.

Daniel, a Delta State signee, finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Moore was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Taylor went 2-for-4 with a walk and a steal. Cochran scored twice and stole a base, and Murray was 1-for-2 with two walks. Joyner, Sikes and Whitfield also had one hit apiece.
