Tharptown boys beat Bears, improve to 4-2 in area play

Cole Daniel scored 18 points, Levi McCormack added 16, and Winston Nolen had a big fourth quarter for Tharptown on Tuesday as the Wildcats completed a season sweep of area rival Phillips with a 62-42 win at home.
 
Tharptown (7-8 overall, 4-2 in Class 1A, Area 13) was leading just 38-30 at the end of three quarters before Nolen hit back-to-back threes and scored eight quick points to open the fourth and stretch the lead to 46-32. He finished with 15 points, 11 of which came in the final quarter.
 
Daniel, a senior forward, also finished strong, scoring eight points down the stretch to help the Wildcats out-score Phillips 24-12 in the fourth. He finished 6-for-8 from the field and 6-for-11 from the foul line, grabbing six rebounds to go along with his 18 points.
 
McCormack, a senior guard, hit a three-pointer in the first quarter, giving him at least one made three in all 15 games this season. He finished with seven rebounds and three steals to go along with his 16 points. Misael Saldana added seven points, nine rebounds and three steals, and Edward Lopez had four points and seven boards. Aaron Creasy chipped in with two points and three steals.
 
Brandon Green and Mathew Bradbury each had 12 points to lead Phillips.

Tied with Tharptown at the end of one quarter, second-ranked Phillips out-scored the Lady Wildcats 22-8 in the second on its way to remaining unbeaten in area play.
 
Gracie Hallman had 14 points to lead Phillips, which led 33-19 at the half and 47-26 at the end of three. Ally McCollum added 13 points, and Baily Bishop, Lexie Dishner and Julianna Taylor each finished with eight.
 
Ameliah Dawson led Tharptown (7-9 overall, 2-4 in Class 1A, Area 13) with 10 points. Catie Dawson hit two threes in the first quarter and finished with eight points. Aly Vandiver and Adriana Borden had five points apiece, and Brooke Daily, Shaylee Wieting and Linda Bahena each scored two.
