Lady Red Devils hold off Hackleburg for area win

Abby Hester had four hits for Vina on Thursday, and Kaitlyn King added three hits and three RBIs as the Lady Red Devils held off area rival Hackleburg 13-12.

The two teams combined for 12 runs in the first inning alone. Hester singled to left and stole second to start the top of the first for Vina. Brook Brown reached on a bunt, and then King’s RBI single made it 1-0. Scooter Johnson added a two-run double and then scored on an error to put the Lady Devils on top 4-0.

The lead didn’t last long, as Hackleburg took advantage of three hits and then five straight Vina errors to score eight runs in the bottom of the first and take an 8-4 lead.

The Lady Red Devils cut into the lead with three runs in the top of the third. King and Johnson both singled and scored on a base hit by Baylee Hutcheson. Hutcheson scored on an error to trim the lead to 8-7. Vina then tied the game in the top of the fourth when Hester singled to right, stole second and third, and came home on Brown’s sac fly to make it 8-8.

In the top of the fifth, Hutcheson reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice by Kassidie Gesler to give the Lady Devils a 9-8 lead. Hester sparked a four-run sixth inning by Vina with a double to left. Brown reached on a bunt, and both runners scored on a two-run single by King to make it 11-8. Hutcheson came through with another RBI single, then stole a base and scored on an error as Vina stretched the lead to 13-8.

Hackleburg, held scoreless by King since the first inning, loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on an error and two walks and then hit a grand slam to cut the lead to 13-12. The Lady Red Devils stranded a runner in the top of the seventh, and then King allowed a leadoff single in the bottom half of the inning. The sophomore pitcher recovered to close out the win, striking out the next two batters and then snagging a line drive for the final out.

King finished with eight strikeouts and was the winning pitcher. Hester had two RBIs to go along with her four hits and also stole six bases, giving her 26 steals on the season. Johnson, Hutcheson and Brown each had two hits and two RBIs.

Vina will return to action Saturday in the Eagle Classic in Tuscumbia.
