Bobcats hit 20-win mark, finish unbeaten in area play

Nate Owens threw his fourth complete game of the season for Phil Campbell on Thursday as the Bobcats earned their 20th win and wrapped up an unbeaten season in area play with an 8-1 win at Sulligent.

Peyton Thomas had a season-high four hits for Phil Campbell (20-9, 6-0 in Class 2A, Area 14), including an RBI double in a five-run sixth inning that broke open a 3-1 game. Cole Motes also had an RBI double in the big sixth inning, and Austen Baker had an RBI single.

Owens (6-2) allowed just one unearned run on five hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking four. The junior lefthander threw 95 pitches and took over the staff lead in wins with six on the year.

The Bobcats scored twice in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk to Motes and a sacrifice fly by Baker. They stretched the lead to 3-0 on an RBI single by Brandon Thomas in the top of the third. Sulligent got its only run off Owens in the bottom of the fifth, but Phil Campbell put the game away in the top of the sixth.

Peyton Thomas finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, recording his 10th multi-hit game of the season. Baker did likewise, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Motes was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Joe Hardy went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Owens and Mike Wrona each had one hit, and Brett Saint scored twice.
