Quinn, Allen lead Lady Bobcats past Sulligent in area tournament opener

Cypress Quinn and Kallie Allen combined to go 6-for-6 with six RBIs for Phil Campbell on Tuesday, helping the Lady Bobcats pound Sulligent 12-2 in the first round of the Class 2A, Area 14 tournament at Lamar County.

Kenner Scott added three hits for Phil Campbell (22-10), which broke open a close game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth on its way to earning a date with top-seeded Lamar County on Thursday at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will clinch a regional berth and move into the area finals, while the loser will face fourth-seeded Red Bay in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m.

The Lady Bobcats, seeded second, grabbed an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Leeah Jackson was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second and scored on Quinn's double to center to make it 1-0.

Sulligent tied the game with a run on three singles in the top of the second and had the bases loaded with one out, but Phil Campbell starter Emma Ergle escaped the jam without any further damage.

The Lady Bobcats went back in front in the bottom of the third. Quinn singled with two outs, and Abby Davis followed with an RBI triple to right. Davis scored on a groundball by Chloe Roberson to make it 3-1.

Phil Campbell tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Scott singled, and courtesy runner Jade Roberson stole second. Allen came through with an RBI double and later scored on a groundout by Darby Elliott to make it 5-1.

Sulligent got an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Bobcats put the game away with seven runs in the bottom half. Quinn sparked the big inning with a base hit and later finished it off with a two-run single. In between, Phil Campbell got an RBI single from Chloe Roberson, a base hit from Olivia Knight, a bunt single from Scott, a two-run single from Allen, an RBI single from Elliott, an intentional walk to Jackson and a run by Allen on a wild pitch.

Quinn finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Allen was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs. Scott was 3-for-3 with a run, and Elliott was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Jackson scored twice, and Chloe Roberson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Davis and Knight each went 1-for-3.

Ergle (8-3) went the distance in the circle, allowing one earned run on six hits in five innings.
