My Take on This: Why we cover up the prettiest things is one of life's great puzzles

The majority of us—myself included—like pretty things, but have you ever given thought to the pretty things we buy because it’s the prettiest one in the store, only to cover it up when we get it home?

How many of you have bought a mattress because it was ‘so pretty’? I’ve made that remark more than once myself. But, lo and behold, the unthinkable happens. Once that pretty rose-design mattress is atop the bed, we get out that beautiful set of sheets and cover it up. I’ll lay down on it the first night and then it hits me. I’ve just bought a pretty mattress, but now that concept doesn’t make a lot of sense any more.

My daddy didn’t understand the concept of covering a window in a house. He said you place windows in a house for the light, which simply means the more windows you have, the more light you have. Then Mother would go right behind him placing pretty curtains over the windows, which, of course, would block out the light.

So that’s a question that has puzzled a lot of men throughout the years: Why even put windows in a house? If additional lighting is needed, just add an extra outlet for another lamp. Ta-dah! Problem solved.

I’ve seen edges of a beautiful carpet in a family room, but most of it was covered up by an ornate rug in the center of the carpet. Maybe later they can purchase another to pretect that rug. Maybe that idea would fit the lifestyle of an undercover cop. His carpet would be undercover also.

I know, I know, I can almost hear you saying, ‘That makes no sense at all.’ My take on this is simply, ‘None of this does!’

At one time, I had a picture wall with my boys from babies until graduation. A friend of mine who was in a wheelchair saw it and wanted one. I was delighted to so something nice for this special lady, where she could sit and look at it and love and appreciate it every day. And she did just that until the day she died.

Her husband commented on all the holes in the wall. My reply was simply, “What holes? I don’t see any holes.” They were all covered up.

We’re all guilty of covering up little meaningless stuff. For instance, I’m having a bad hair day; I think I’ll go put on a cap and cover it up.

That’s just my take on this. If you have one on this or an opinion about anything, just write a letter to the editor of this newspaper. I’d enjoy what you have to say.

Until later, take care.
