The Honey Do List: Cool it!

School's out, Memorial Day has passed, and the high temps are here. Summertime in Alabama means we depend on our homes to be an oasis of cool air. Here are some tips that should definitely help with your honey-do list right now.

CHANGE THOSE FILTERS. I guarantee that your A/C unit is working overtime. Filters get clogged up quickly, and It's very important to keep a good flow of clean air to avoid breakdowns and costly repairs. Even window units need filters changed or cleaned. Many window units have nylon filters that can be blown out or washed. Make sure they are dry before reinstalling them and turning on the unit.

CONSIDER A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT. If everyone is gone during the day, a timer can save you money as well as wear on your system. Set the thermostat a little higher during the day and have it set lower in time to cool the house down before you get home. This also keeps the unit from running so hard during the hottest part of the day. "Smart" thermostats that can be controlled from your cell phone are really getting popular and have gotten somewhat less expensive.

USE "BLOCK OUT" CURTAINS, BLINDS OR SHADES. During the hot part of the day, blocking out the heat from the sun can help keep the inside of your home cooler.

OPEN YOUR FOUNDATION VENTS. This is important to allow cool, fresh air to circulate underneath the house. This also helps eliminate dampness that could breed mold or mildew. Check each vent for screens that keep the critters out.

These are just a few tips to help keep you and your wallet more comfortable this summer. Stay cool, and remember that help is just around the corner at your local hardware store.
