Honey Do List: Be seen, be safe, be spooky

Halloween has certainly changed since I was a kid. We would pile in the car (no seat belt laws), go house to house (as long as there was a porch light on), run wide-open across yards in the dark and wear costumes that may or may not have been flame-retardant.

I remember a specific house that no one ever skipped because they always had extra special treats (i.e. popcorn balls, cupcakes, etc..) and some special set-up like Mr.Lane in a clown costume (before they were really scary), but he sat so still you just weren’t sure if he was real or not. Of course he was sitting right at the candy table. (Thanks Mrs. Gladys.)

These days, many groups will get together and have festivals or “trunk or treat” events to provide a safer environment for the little spooks. This is great, but you should never forget to practice safety on Halloween.

1) BE SEEN. It’s very tempting to dress in scary, dark colors. Be sure to add some bright or reflective elements to your child’s costume. Glow sticks, electric lanterns or flashlights are a great idea.

2) BE SAFE. Stay in your comfort zone. Go only to houses or events where you know people. Use your phone and snap a picture of your child prior to going out with costume and without. Of course, always check the candy your child receives.

3) BE SPOOKY. Whether a princess or a witch, costumes should be designed without trip hazards. and all materials should be flame-retardant. Purchased costumes should be plainly labeled. Masks and makeup shouldn’t hinder the child’s ability to see their surroundings.

Have a great Halloween, and don’t forget to “FALL BACK” this weekend as daylight saving time ends. Remember, help is just around the corner at your local hardware store.
