Council tabs Wilson to head street department

A number of actions were taken Tuesday night at the Russellville City Council meeting, including the council naming a temporary street superintendent.

Shannon Wilson, an equipment operator, was named the temporary Street Superintendent for the City of Russellville by unanimous approval. Wilson replaces Roy Price who retired as Street Superintendent on January 1, 2017. Price had worked for the street department for over two decades before announcing his retirement.

According to Russellville Mayor David Grissom, Wilson will serve as Street Superintendent until the council decides to open the vacancy up. The position may be held temporarily for up to six months.

“I’d just like to thank Mayor Grissom and the city council for giving me the opportunity to serve in this role and help the people of Russellville,” Wilson said.

Another item on the agenda – a late addition item – was the approval for the mayor to accept a grant for the Russellville Police Department. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) grant, which amounts to $9000, will be used to purchase tasers for the police department.

In other actions Tuesday night, the council:

  • Approved the authorizing of the mayor and the city clerk to sign necessary line of credit documents on behalf of the City of Russellville.

  • Approved the promotion of Russellville police officers Jessica Clements and Steven Bullion to the rank of sergeant.

  • Approved the request of the Phil Campbell baseball team to waive the rental fee of the A.W. Todd Centre on February 17, 2017.

  • Approved the request of the South Side Baptist Church Relay for Life Team to waive the rental fee for the A.W. Todd Centre on April 14, 2017.
