RHS students inducted at society ceremony

On Monday night, Russellville High School held its annual National Honor Society induction ceremony at the Russellville City Schools Auditorium.

The National Honor Society describes itself as “the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students” and its goal is to “recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.”

The Russellville High School chapter of the National Honor Society, which was established in 1969, recognized 51 active senior members and inducted 67 new members, including 12 graduating seniors. The other 55 inductees are juniors.

As a requirement of the society, candidates and members are required to complete community service hours. This year’s senior members completed 306 community service hours for a total of 612 service hours over the last two years. The 12 senior candidates inducted completed 144 service hours.

The 55 junior candidates completed 330 hours of community service.

During the ceremony, active senior members and senior inductees received gold National Honor Society stoles that they will wear at graduation. Junior inductees were also recognized and joined the senior members on stage.

The American Red Cross also recognized three senior members for their hard work and service. NHS president Logan Wallace, Brenda Moreno, and NHS vice president Layne Boyd received scholarships from the Red Cross to the tune of $750, $1000, and $1500, respectively.

Each year, the Russellville chapter of the National Honor Society holds a blood drive. It is the largest annual blood drive in the southeastern United States, according to the Red Cross representative.

In 2017, the Russellville-hosted blood drive saw a donation of 320 pints of blood. According to the Red Cross representative, over 2000 pints of blood have been donated at Russellville since the RHS chapter started the blood drive campaign over 10 years ago.
