Tharptown project moving forward

The Franklin County Board of Education approved phase two of the Tharptown School project at its Thursday board meeting.

Phase Two includes the construction of a building to house six elementary classrooms that will be built to serve as a safe room for all elementary students. This portion of the project will have to go through the bid process, while the previously approved cafeteria renovation project is moving forward having already been bid.

Once completed, Tharptown Elementary will have 10 new classrooms and the school will have a new cafeteria for use by the elementary and high school.

As for the band hall and science lab building at Vina, that situation remains in a stalemate with school officials maintaining the building has structural damage and is unsafe, with Alabama Risk Management officials saying it can be repaired.

A meeting held Thursday was described as “not favorable” by Superintendent of Education Greg Hamilton. A portable building has been placed for use as a band hall.

In other action, the board:
-- approved renewing the Live Work Policy for Franklin County Career Tech Center.

-- approved paying Jamie McNeil, Red Bay teacher, $500 stipend for serving as spring semester yearbook sponsor. The monies will be reimbursed by Red Bay High School annual staff.

-- heard an update from Hamilton about hail damage to the roof of the old gymnasium at Belgreen High School. Hamilton said it is likely the building will need a new roof.

-- approved personnel moves including the retirement of Tim Wells, PCES teacher; Daniel Taylor as a new teacher substitute for 2017; Sonny Glasgow and Richie Hester as summer school teachers for the period of June 5-30.
The next board meeting is set for Tuesday, June 20, at 5:15 p.m., with work session at 5 p.m.
