Russellville Elementary School named best in 'CLAS' for 2022

The honors keep coming for Russellville City Schools, as Russellville Elementary School was named last week as the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools Banner School for District Seven.

The announcement follows Russellville High School being named one of Alabama's top 25 high schools by U.S. News and World Report in its 2022 rankings.

30 Alabama schools received CLAS distinction among Alabama's eight state school board districts. The CLAS Banner School Program recognizes schools that “showcase outstanding programs and service to students.”

Among the four schools honored in District Seven, RES was named the overall 2022 CLAS Banner School.

RES earned this honor because of its innovative its Bilingual Team-Taught Science Program, implemented during the 2020-21 school year to meet educational needs of students with limited and interrupted formal education. The success of the program was demonstrated by increased testing scores at the school.

This is a great honor for RES and shows the value of the work they are doing to provide each and every student at their school with the best educational possible,” RCS Superintendent Dr. Heath Grimes said.

Russellville City Schools have a higher than average percentage of English language learners, which naturally means our teachers must find ways to make sure these students are able to achieve success academically while working on the language and educational barriers these students face. They care deeply about each student, and that is so evident,” he added.

The awards were presented during a May 9th luncheon in Prattville. Each school was nominated by its superintendent, with 166 school programs nominated statewide.

Grimes commended RES Principal Kristie Ezzell and her faculty and staff for “all they do to improve the educational opportunities for our students, and the administration's support of the program and overall learning at the school.”
