Franklin County well-represented at 100th annual AHSAA state track and field championships

The 100th Alabama High School Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships kick off today with ample representation from Franklin County.

The large-school meet (4A-7A) begins today and runs through Saturday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The state meet for 1A-3A will be at Cullman's Oliver Woodard Stadium this Friday and Saturday.

More than 2,000 high school athletes will take part, including 21 from Franklin County.

Coach Richie Hester's Vina girls' track team will once again be well-represented. Freshman Mackenzie Elrod's second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles at Sectionals, with a time of 20.12, earned her a trip to the state meet. Her teammate, Kaylee Davis, finished sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and earned a wildcard bid to state. Her time was 22.25.

Coach Luke Childers' Vina boys team had two athletes qualify for state: junior Manny Alatriste in the triple jump (time of 35.07) and sophomore Bryson Finch in the 110 meter hurdles (26.32). Alatriste placed second at Sectionals and Finch was sixth.

Russellville High School will be represented by Ari Willingham in the girls' 100 meter dash (13.29) and 200 meter dash (27.50), Keira Cruse in the girls' long jump (15'2.75”) and triple jump (31”05”). (Times in parentheses are the athlete's results at Sectionals).

Russellville's boys' track and field team had six different qualifiers for state: Cam Phinizee in the 110-meter dash(11.41), Skyler Ergle in the 110 meter hurdles (16.65), Earl King in the high jump(6.00), Cash Crumpton in the long jump(21'04”), Shiloh Willis in the shot put (40'05.25”), Tait Burns(152'08”) and Cash Crumpton(152'02.00”) in the javelin.

Tharptown High School will be represented by Jessie Mitchell in the 400 meter dash(55.75) and Angel Garcia in the 3200 meter run (11:18.55Belgreen High School saw five girls qualify for state, including: Isabella Tate in the 800 meter run(2:50.94), Briseyda Luna in the 1600 meter run(6:42.08), Alexa Gault(21.26) and Tanisha Clay(22.19) in the 100 meter hurdles and
