The Russellville City Council approved a resolution at its January 21st meeting declaring January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Russellville.
The council presented a copy of the resolution to Stephanie Jones with A21, a non-profit organization working to promote awareness of the epidemic of human trafficking not only across the United States, but globally.
In Alabama, 203 calls were made to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, with 33 of those from victims or survivors of human trafficking. Interstate 20 is a known corridor for human trafficking and sex trafficking. Last August, 10 individuals were arrested in a sex trafficking sting operation in Montgomery.
In other agenda items, the council:
--authorized a loan payoff at CB&S Bank for a City of Russellville loan in the amount of $45,472.44.
--accepted a letter of resignation from Todd Elliot, utility technician in the Russellville Street Department and declared a vacancy for the position and authorized advertisement for job applications.
--declared a vacancy for heavy equipment operator II in the Russellville Street Department and authorized advertisement to solicit job applications.
The next regular meeting of the Russellville City Council is set for February 3, 2025, with work session at 6 p.m., and meeting to follow.
