Franklin County school board approves calendar for 2017-18 school year

The Franklin County Board of Education approved the school calendar for 2017-2018 at its January 24 meeting.

The first day of school for students will be August 9, 2017, with teacher work days and in-service days beginning August 3.
Christmas holidays will be longer next year, with the break beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, December 15 and lasting through Tuesday, January 2, 2018. The last day of classes will be Thursday, May 24 with graduation set for that night and Friday, May 25.

The calendar will be posted on the board’s web site for easy access at www.franklin.k12.al.us.

In other action, the board:

•Heard a special presentation from the Tharptown Elementary School Ambassadors in conjunction with School Board Appreciation Month in January. Students presented board members with special gifts and delivered a message of thanks for their service to Franklin County Schools. Faculty sponsors for the TES Ambassadors are Lisa Gann and Amanda McMurray.

•Approved out-of-state trips as follows: Red Bay High School agriscience class to Greenwood, MS February, 2017; RBHS girls softball team to Belmont, MS April 3, 2017; RBHS varsity baseball team to Belmont February 24, 2017; RBHS varsity and junior varsity baseball teams to New Site, MS March 4 and to Alcorn Central on April 8.

•Heard a report that the Tharptown Cafeteria project was re-bid due to all bids coming in over the bid amount. Architects made modifications and removed some square footage to allow for reduced bids this time around.
The next regular board meeting is set for February 28, with work session at 5 p.m. and the meeting following at 5:15 p.m.
