Female inmate found dead in Russellville City jail cell

A 30-year-old woman was found dead in her jail cell inside the Russellville City Jail late Wednesday morning.

Sarah Ann Campbell was arrested around 7 a.m., Wednesday and charged with public intoxication, according to Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett.

After she was booked into the jail, Campbell was placed in a woman's cell. At the time, she was the only female inmate, Hargett said.

Campbell was found unresponsive when lunch was being served to the inmates, between 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m., Hargett said.

Emergency medical personnel were called to the jail but Campbell was pronounced dead after their arrival.

RPD officers were called to a local motel Wednesday morning after a man reported a woman he did not know had entered his vehicle and was seated therein.

Hargett said officers determined Campbell to be the female inside the man's vehicle. She was arrested and charged with public intoxication at that time.

Hargett said officers determined Campbell was not in need of medical treatment at the time of the arrest. And she did not request medical treatment at that time.

RPD investigators contacted the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to handle the investigation since it involved a fatality inside the city jail.
