A new fishing and recreation pier is the latest improvement at Little Bear Creek Dam Reservation, as Tennessee Valley Authority officials work to make the area more attractive for recreational use.
Officials with TVA and the Bear Creek Development Authority held a dedication for the pier on October 17th. Several local elected officials, representatives from the Franklin County Development Authority, the Franklin County Extension Office and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce also attended the event.
Derek South, TVA Recreational Specialist, served as project manager for the $200,000 project. South said the project was funded through TVA's Enhanced Stewardship program, which supports projects around the 49 dams that are part of TVA's waterways.
The arrow-shaped pier was constructed in reference to the original pier that was built during the construction of the reservoir, more than 40 years ago. South said TVA also purchased new picnic and grill facilities at the Little Bear Creek Dam Reservation.
The pier was constructed of concrete and steel and is approximately 120 feet long. The water depth at the end of the pier is between 20-25 feet, so that presented additional challenges with its construction.
Shannon McKinney, BCDA Administrator, said the new pier is another example of the effectiveness of the partnership between BCDA and TVA.
“We work hard with TVA and it's a team effort as it has been for years,” McKinney said. “We are proud to partner with them.We also partnered with Alabama Game and Fish to place four fish attractors at the end of the pier.”
The new pier is fully compatible with Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.
A recent study showed that TVA lakes generate approximately $12 billion in economic value and support 130,000 jobs each year.
The pier is expected to be a popular backdrop for prom, senior and wedding photos.
