Jacob Mayberry scored a season-high 16 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Belgreen on Tuesday night as the Bulldogs blitzed Phillips 90-56 for their fourth straight win to open the season.
Brant Bragwell and Mason Bragwell each added 14 points for Belgreen (4-0, 1-0 in Class 1A, Area 13). Payton Scott, Jake Taylor and Ashlee Britton finished with nine points apiece, and Seth Taylor added eight. Caleb Pinkard scored seven points, and Eli Hiser and Gaven Taylor each had two.
Mayberry, a senior point guard, got off to a fast start, scoring eight first-quarter points to help the Bulldogs take an early 17-10 lead. Scott, another senior, put up all nine of his points in a high-scoring second quarter that saw Belgreen out-score Phillips 27-22 to take a 44-32 lead into the locker room.
The Bulldogs caught fire from the perimeter in the third quarter and kept pouring it on, out-scoring the Bears 28-18 to open up a 72-50 advantage. Seth Taylor knocked down a pair of threes in the third, and Brant and Mason Bragwell also connected from deep. The third-quarter scoring was almost perfectly balanced for Belgreen, which got six points from Seth Taylor, five apiece from the Bragwells, four each from Mayberry and Jake Taylor, and two from both Britton and Gaven Taylor.
Britton and Pinkard combined for 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs closed the game on an 18-6 run to reach the 90-point mark for the first time since routing Waterloo 99-68 in last year’s sub-regional round.
Belgreen finished Tuesday night’s win 11-for-14 from the foul line and made five threes as a team. The Bulldogs will look for a second straight area win when they visit Vina on Friday.
Brandon Green led Phillips with 28 points, 24 of which came in the second and third quarters. Brodie Coan added 15 points.

Eighth-ranked Phillips continued its fast start in area play, rolling to a 22-point halftime lead over the Lady Bulldogs in Tuesday’s home win.
Gracie Hallman led Phillips (5-0, 4-0 in Class 1A, Area 13) with 24 points. She went 8-for-8 from the foul line and had 12 points in the second quarter, helping the Lady Bears out-score Belgreen 29-5 to take a 38-16 lead into the locker room.
Allie McCollum added 15 points and 15 rebounds for Phillips, and Bailey Bishop had 11 points and 10 boards. Lexie Dishner scored 11 points, and Julianna Taylor and Lexie Hajjarr each added 10. The Lady Bears were 24-for-34 from the line.
Junior guard Gabbie Moore led Belgreen (2-2, 0-1) with 19 points, connecting on four threes. Emma Dempsey and Ansley Tate each added 10 points, and Jasmine Martin hit a pair of threes to finish with six. The Lady Bulldogs were just 13-for-27 from the line.
Belgreen will travel to Vina for another area game on Friday.
