Red Bay rallies from eight runs down, but Belmont prevails 18-15 in wild game

Red Bay rallied from eight runs down to take the lead with a nine-run fifth inning on Saturday, but rival Belmont (MS) scored four times in the sixth to go back in front and then held on to win a wild game 18-15 at Red Bay High School.

In addition to the 33 total runs (14 of which were scored in the third inning, and 14 more of which were scored in the fifth), the two teams combined for 27 hits, 16 walks and 10 hit batters.

Belmont scored nine runs in the top of the third to take a 9-1 lead, but Red Bay (8-4) came right back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 9-6. Belmont restored the eight-run lead with five runs in the top of the fifth, but then the Tigers tallied nine runs in the bottom of the inning. They tied the game 14-14 on a three-run double to center by Alex Burroughs, who then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Luke Rooker.

The lead didn’t last long, as Belmont took advantage of three Red Bay errors to score four runs in the top of the sixth and take an 18-15 lead that would—somehow—hold up over the final two innings.

Max Bullen led Red Bay’s 14-hit attack, going 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases. Burroughs was 2-for-3 with four RBIs, and Kaleb Bragwell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kolby Bragwell was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, and Chase Allen went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Skylar Brazil also had two hits, and Rooker was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Hayden Murray was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Cade McKinney walked twice and scored twice.

Four different Red Bay pitchers combined to throw 147 pitches.

Red Bay put together four walks, two hit batters and five hits—including a two-run single by Hayden Murray and an RBI single by Allen—to score 10 runs in the first inning. Colbert County cut the lead to 10-3, but the Tigers got RBI singles from Kaleb Sims, Burroughs and Kaleb Bragwell to make it a 13-3 game in the top of the fourth.

The Indians kept coming, cutting the lead to 13-9 with a six-run bottom of the fourth, but Red Bay responded with four runs in the top of the fifth to regain control.

Skylar Brazil (3-0) was the Tigers’ most effective pitcher on the day, holding Colbert County scoreless on two hits over the final 3.1 innings. He struck out seven and walked just one.
