Jackson blasts 20th career home run, but Lady 'Cats can't out-hit mistakes in loss to Covenant

Phil Campbell out-hit Covenant Christian 12-4 on Tuesday, but Covenant took advantage of nine errors and ten walks to hand the Lady Bobcats their second straight loss, 11-7 at the Roger Bedford Sportsplex.

Leeah Jackson went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for Phil Campbell, matching her single-season career-high of eight home runs set last year as a junior. Katie Thomas also went 3-for-4, doubling twice and scoring twice, but the Lady Bobcats (14-5) couldn’t out-hit their own mistakes.

Covenant got on the board in the top of the first, scoring a run on a walk, a stolen base and an error. Phil Campbell took the lead in the bottom of the inning when Thomas doubled to left and scored on Jackson’s 20th career home run, a two-run shot to left that made it 2-1.

The Lady Bobcats added to the lead in the bottom of the second when Olivia Knight singled, moved up on a bunt by Harley Cummings and then scored on a two-out hit by Darby Elliott to make it 3-1.

Covenant took advantage of an error, a double and three straight walks to score twice and tie the game in the top of the third. Emily Swinney relieved Cummings in the circle with the bases loaded and one out, getting a strikeout and a pop-up to escape the jam and keep it a 3-3 game.

Phil Campbell went back in front in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of two errors by Covenant to grab a 4-3 lead.

Covenant took the lead for good in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on two hits, two errors and a catcher’s interference call. The Lady Bobcats rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth, getting a leadoff single from Jackson and a one-out hit from Abby Davis. Jackson scored on a squeeze bunt by Knight, and Swinney’s RBI single cut the lead to 7-6. Jade Roberson followed with a single to put the go-ahead run on base, but Phil Campbell stranded two runners and still trailed by one.

Covenant got those two runs back in the top of the sixth on two walks and a double to make it 9-6. The Lady Bobcats scored their final run in the bottom of the inning on doubles by Thomas and Jackson, but Covenant took advantage of two walks and two errors to score twice in the top of the seventh and then held on for the 11-7 win.

Swinney (8-1) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run on two hits in 3.2 innings. She struck out two and walked one.

Jackson finished with three RBIs and three runs scored. Swinney was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Davis was 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Knight, Roberson and Elliott also had one hit apiece.
