RHS basketball players help run mini-hoops camp

The Russellville Golden Tigers and Lady Tigers co-hosted the 1st Annual Mini Basketball Clinic on Oct. 17-18 for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The camp was a fundraiser for both programs, and team members from the varsity and JV teams helped with the clinic.

According to RHS Lady Golden Tigers Head Coach Jermaine Groce, the purpose of the camp was to help elementary student develop their basketball skills, let them play different games to allow them a chance to have fun while playing, and hopefully to begin to develop a love for basketball that might lead to them playing once they reach middle school and high school age.

There are many kids who may not have played basketball before or may not understand it very well, and we thought by having this camp, we could introduce these younger kids to the sport and allow our student athletes to give back by training up these younger students,” Groce said. “It’s a great way for us to start preparing our elementary students for playing competitively in middle school and high school and promote our program.”

Senior Lady Tigers player Jenna Whitfield said the camp participants learned that basketball can be fun, and if they work hard they will have success.

My favorite part of the camp was being around the kids and playing with them,” Whitfield said. “It was fun to see them learning more about the sport and having a good time.”
