Recent Russellville High School graduate Ella Goggans, a member of the RHS varsity cheerleading team, will have the opportunity to further her education and cheer at the college level after committing to joining the University of North Alabama cheer squad.
On Tuesday afternoon, Goggans made it official with a scholarship signing ceremony held at the Russellville Field House where she was congratulated by coaches, teammates, family, and friends.
"It's very exciting because most people don't get to further their career in their sport," Goggans told the Franklin Free Press. "I'm very grateful and excited for the opportunity."
RHS varsity cheer coach Kaylee Brannon weighed in on Goggans’ achievements and what she has meant to the program.
“I’m incredibly proud of Ella and all that she’s accomplished,” Brannon said. “Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching her on our Varsity Cheer team at Russellville High School. She’s been an outstanding leader as our captain, earned All-American at UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) Cheer Camp, received countless awards, and was recently selected for UCA Staff.
“She’s truly one of the most hardworking and dedicated athletes I’ve coached, and I know she’ll be a huge asset to the University of North Alabama’s cheer program,” she added. “I can’t wait to see all she achieves at the next level!”
Goggans, who has participated in tumble and cheer since the fifth grade and has cheered at Russellville since the seventh grade, said she enjoys cheer because it allows the opportunity for constant improvement.
"I like the challenges that come with it," she said. "You get to further your skills and challenge yourself."
At UNA, Goggans plans to study exercise science and chase a minor in business in the hopes of one day opening up her own tumble center in Russellville.
